Description of Mechanical Equivalent Of Heat Apparatus:

The apparatus incorporates a universal electric motor with vari-able speed control for driving a brass drum calorimeter, two sets of weights, heavy and light, a set of brake bands to encircle the drum, a spring balance, a thermometer and a counter for recording the revolutions of the drum. All items of equipment are mounted on the steel cabinet which contains the motor control gear.

Operation of Mechanical Equivalent Of Heat Apparatus:

When fully assembled the double part of the belts suspends the heavier weights up to a total of 4 kg, while the single part suspends the carrier for the light weights and the spring balance. A mea-sured amount of water, approx. 350g, is then carefully inserted into the calorimeter. Rotation is then begun and the light weights are adjusted to keep the heavy weight in floating equilibrium with the spring balance pointer near the centre of the scale. Calorimeter speed can then be set between 60-120 rev/min. After a few revolutions the friction will become practically constant and the water temperature will rise at an approximate rate of 1ºC per 100 revolutions. The weight of the drum is engraved upon it which, together with the specific heat of the brass, 0.092, allows the total thermal capacity of the drum to be calculated. The heat generated is then the product of the total thermal capacity of the drum and water, and the observed rise in water temperature. Mechanical work done is the product of the difference in weight on either side of the drum, including the carriers, multiplied by the number of revolu-tions of the drum and its circumference.

Description of Temperature Measuring Apparatus:

Temperature Measuring Bench is designed to demonstrate a number of commonly used methods of temperature measurement, and provides the means for calibration and accuracy comparisons of the different methods. Hence, suitable measuring devices can be found for particular applications. Features are provided so that a number of faults commonly occurring in thermocouple systems can be demonstrated. In addition the unit may be used to provide a temperature measuring facility for use with other experiments. The main unit comprises a bench mounting console which contains the hot water bath, furnace, ice bath, a digital resistance thermometer/thermocouple instrument, digital NiCr/NiA1 thermocouple instrument and power supplies. The hot water bath comprises a Dewer flask whose lid is fitted with a combined heater stirrer unit, low water cut out to provide boiling water reference at 760 mm Hg barometric pressure. The heater unit incorporates an adjustable thermostatic temperature control and over-temperature cut-out. The furnace comprises a brass block with holes drilled to accept a glass thermometer, resistance thermometer and thermo-couple. An electrical heating element is fitted into the block, the electrical supply provided from a variable transformer with front panel control so that the rate of heating and final temperature can be controlled as desired. An overtemperature thermostat is set to limit the maximum temperature to 250ºC.

Description of Humidity Measuring Apparatus:

The essential component of the apparatus is a large, stainless steel duct which is supplied with air from a small blower via a set of damping filters. The air flow can be varied by regulating the butterfly valve situated at the blower outlet, and the flow rate calculated from the pressure drop across the blower inlet orifice as measured by the sloping manometer mounted against the back of the bench. A window is provided in the air duct to enable the various readings to be taken without disturbing the conditions inside. Instrumentation consists of two screen-type wet and dry bulb hygrometers, one giving a digital readout by means of thermistor probes and the other giving a direct readout via a glass thermometer. A further wet and dry bulb hygrometer of the aspirated type is provided in which the inclusion of an integral blower affords constant air velocity across the bulb. A sling hygrometer is included, to demonstrate a further, simple method of ventilation of the wet and dry bulb type. Finally, there are two further types of hygrometers included with the apparatus, the first being a hair hygrometer seen through the window and the second one being a Vaisala capacitance type instrument with digital readout shown on top of the bench.

Description of Stirling Cycle Hot Air Engine:

The cycle on which the engine is based consists of two isothermal processes and two constant volume processes (the latter being performed with the aid of a regenerator). The source of heat is provided from a low voltage electric element so that it may readily be controlled and measured. Output is measured by the simple dynamometer supplied. The engine has one working cylinder and a transfer cylinder arranged side by side in open communication one with another but without any intervening valve mechanism. The power cylinder has a single acting piston connected to the crankshaft while the transfer cylinder has a double acting displacer piston and regenerator operated by an eccentric, the phasing of which can be altered in relation to the crankpin of the power cylinder. The optimum phase angle can be determined and rotation can be reversed. The heating element is located at one end of the transfer cylinder, which is made of pyrex glass, so that the element and the transfer piston can be clearly seen. Relatively little information exists concerning the detail design of small hot air engines and this engine was designed from first principles with the aid of a computer to determine the optimum proportions of the various working elements. A variety of experiments can be carried out and the effect on performance of the use of gases of different specific heat ratio can be established. By means of the transparent cylinder the temperature of the element may be seen to fall as heat is extracted from it when the engine starts from rest.

Description of Two Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor:

The bedplate is a welded steel structure on which is mounted the lower air receiver, dynamometer and the two compressor slide bases, while the bedplate itself is mounted on six flexible spring mounts which provide vibration isolation. The dynamometer is a separately excited DC motor with the stator of the machine mounted in self-aligning trunnion bearings. The dynamometer is fitted with torque arms, one of which connects to a strain gauge load cell for load measurement. A 100 tooth wheel is fitted at the non-drive end of the machine where a magnetic pick-up feeds a pulse train signal to a “frequency to voltage” convertor for speed feedback/indication.

Experimental Capabilities of Two Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor:  

The twin cylinder first stage compressor is fitted with pressure operated off-loading devices on the inlet valves so that the performance of a single stage compressed air system with an air receiver and with variable demand can be fully investigated. By changing the compressor speed the relationship between the intake volume flow rate, the air receiver volume and delivery flow rate can be examined for various duty cycles. As a two stage system the effect of capacity ratio between the two stages on the inter stage pressure may be investigated by altering the second stage drive ratio. The effect of intercooling may also be examined. The air delivery characteristics of an air compressor may be evaluated, in particular the variation of air delivery with pressure and compressor speed. The compressors are provided with the necessary modifications and fittings for use with Electronic Engine Indicating & Combustion Analysis System for Gasoline & Diesel. The use of this equipment allows a full dynamic analysis of cylinder pressures including Pressure/ Volume diagrams.

The Osborne Reynolds' Demonstration operates in a vertical mode. A header tank containing stilling media provides a constant head of water through a bellmouth entry to the flow visualisation pipe. Flow through this pipe is regulated using a control valve at the discharge end.

The flow rate of water through the pipe can be measured utilizing the volumetric tank (or measuring cylinder) of the Hydraulics Bench. Velocity of the water can therefore be determined to allow calculation of Reynolds' number.

The equipment uses a similar dye injection technique to that of Reynolds' original apparatus to enable observation of flow conditions.
